Skyscanner at ITB Berlin 2024: Summer travel & sustainability insights

ITB Berlin returned this March to welcome travel providers, experts and businesses for three days of networking, insights and discovery. As one of the world’s largest travel shows, the event this year recorded nearly 100,000 attendees.

We were there too, sharing our latest insights on summer travel and sustainability initiatives, while soaking up the atmosphere and watching a keynote or three about the future of travel tech (hint: it’s all about AI).

Skyscanner Horizons: 2024 summer travel trends

Did you know that 17 days is the average trip length for APAC travellers visiting London this summer?

At ITB Berlin, we revealed insights like this in our latest Horizons snapshot report, using our forward-looking search data from more than 110m users a month.

Presented by Zeynep Mutlu Bigalı, Skyscanner’s Head of Destination Partnerships EMEA, the session showcased the latest search and destination trends for summer.

Unlocking sustainability with travel tech

Kirsty Webster, Skyscanner’s Industry & Partner Sustainability Lead, joined experts from Expedia, Booking.com, Amadeus and Global Travel Tech to share thoughts on how tech can accelerate the adoption of sustainable choices.

Insights included:

  • 90% of travellers want more sustainable options, with 50% saying they’re willing to pay more for them – but they find it hard to understand the options available.
  • There’s a huge opportunity to engage with millions of travellers about sustainability every day – to educate them and show them the difference their money makes.
  • How it’s travel tech’s role to provide trusted information during the booking journey, in an easy-to-understand way which raises the visibility of sustainable initiatives.
  • How the Travel Impact Model (TIM) highlights progress, but more work is needed across accommodation, small businesses and the supply chain to bring travel together.

During the panel, we also announced the launch of Global Travel Tech.

Bringing together ourselves, Amadeus, Booking Holdings, eDreams ODIGEO, Expedia Group and Travelport, our mission is to help empower travellers with more transparency, competition and choice, as well jointly advocate on issues facing the travel industry.

On top of this, we’re excited to launch a new partnership with PATA, the Pacific Asia Travel Association, working together to provide destinations with insights and expertise on traveller behaviour and evolving trends to help inform their strategies.
