How to Make the Most of a Conference

There’s no better way to gain insights into your industry, gain new contacts and learn new strategies than to get out of the office and attend a conference! The last few weeks have been jam-packed with conferences for Skyscanner Business and we wanted to share some of the ways you can make the most of them.

Be intentional with your time

At the start of a conference, the length of the day can be daunting but before you know it’s 3 o’clock and you haven’t spoken to any new clients yet. Make sure you are strategic with your time, this may mean getting a balance between sessions, social events, 1 to 1 meetings while still making room for some down time.  Anything you attend at a conference should be aligned with extending your network or allowing you to get one step closer to a business goal.

Build upon your relationships

Of course any conference is a fantastic opportunity to expand your network of contacts, however it is also an opportunity to build upon your existing relationships. Catching up with existing partners over email or on the phone will never be able to compete with catching up in person. Reach out to existing clients, who you know will be at the event a few weeks before to make sure you have factored in time for them.

Learn from people in the know

Make sure you gravitate towards the experts of your industry, which in the world of conferences usually means the panelists or keynote speakers. It is definitely worth asking questions during the sessions or even waiting behind to speak to the panelists directly.

Divide and conquer

Conferences can be overwhelming, especially if you are attending conferences the size of Mobile World Congress. So if you are with a colleague make sure you attend different sessions and tackle different areas. Taking the divide and conquer strategy allows you to speak to as many people as possible and of course, gain better insights about your industry for your whole team.

Report back to your team

Once home and back in the office make sure you set aside time to report back to your team the key learnings from the event, which will enable you to get the most value out of the event. It is also valuable to share the contacts you gained at the event, particularly if a certain colleague would be better suited to manage a new client. Establishing this culture of sharing knowledge will allow the entire team to develop.
